Synesthesia Visualizer | Motion Graphics
About the project:
"Synesthesia Visualizer’ is a motion graphic project that blends the sensory experience of synesthesia with visual animation. Synesthesia, where music is perceived as shapes, lines, and colors, is used to visually represent different music genres as unique products.
The goal of the project was to explore various animation styles and bring to life the visual essence of what we hear.

Approach
The approach to this project began with a deep dive into understanding synesthesia and exploring how different music genres could be represented through colors and shapes. Extensive research was conducted on music visualization, focusing on elements like melody, harmony, tempo, and beats.
To refine the depiction of synesthesia, two contrasting music genres—Rock and Classical—were selected. This naturally led to choosing a song and artist from each genre. Additional research was done to identify artists who are synesthetes, exploring how their condition influences their music.
From this, the final songs and artists were chosen:
-
Death of A Bachelor by Panic! At the Disco, whose lead vocalist, Brendon Urie is a synesthete
-
Cornfield Chase by Hans Zimmer, who is also a synesthete
Moodboards
Below are the crafted mood boards for the chosen genres of the project namely Rock and Classical respectively.
Ideation
The following is the comparison inferences developed via research into the genres to allow focus on what to visually represent and pay attention to while developing the animation.
This was followed by a brainstorm and ideation for both the genres of the visual concepts based on selected sections of the chosen songs.
Storyboard
Below is the drafted out storyboard which was the outcome of the above ideation process as to how the motion graphic would go about.
The sequence takes us through the following order: Introduction, Rock Snippet, Classical Snippet, Rock Visuals, Classical Visuals and finally, Merged/Overlapping Visuals.
Animatic
To get a clearer understanding of how the motion would look like across the storyboard frames, a rough animatic was created timed to the final edited version of the audio.
It was made by taking the storyboard and drawing the in between frames across each section.
Styleframes & Visuals
Static visual frames were designed to get an idea how the certain frames of the final animation would appear and to act as reference to the styling during development.
Final Deliverable
The final deliverable represented is that of an animated motion graphic video showing the concept of a “Synesthesia Visualizer”.
